What Is Uptime? Understanding Server Availability

Uptime describes the percentage of time a service remains available during a measurement period.

How percentages translate into time

A small percentage difference can represent meaningful downtime over a month or year. Always check the measurement period and whether planned maintenance is excluded.

Monitor from outside

External monitoring can test HTTP, TCP and other services from independent locations. One failed check does not always mean a complete outage, so confirm with multiple attempts and server logs.

Improve availability

Use monitoring, capacity planning, updates, backups, redundant infrastructure and documented incident response. Uptime is one part of reliability and should be evaluated with support quality and recovery capability.
