VPN Server Setup Checklist

A VPN deployment requires more than installing a package. Plan address ranges, authentication, routing, DNS and firewall rules before allowing production users.

Prepare the server

Install updates, assign a stable hostname and restrict administrative access. Choose a supported VPN solution and follow its official documentation.

Configure routing and access

Allow only the VPN port, define which internal networks clients can reach and avoid overlapping address ranges.

Test clients

Verify connection, DNS resolution, internet routing and access restrictions from multiple device types. Store recovery credentials securely and monitor logs.
